Bert’s NR Simmentals is a Purebred Simmental operation located near Haywood, Manitoba. My Mom and Dad – Denise and Robert de Rocquigny – focused on commercial Charolais cattle when I was younger. However, as I became more involved with the farm and the cattle industry, I quickly realized the unlimited potential of Simmental genetics. We made the transition to the Simmental breed and have never looked back. My wife Pam and I bought the farm from my parents in 2005. We now operate Bert’s NR Simmentals along with our two boys Samuel and Nathan and friend Gerald Dequier.
HISTORY. Bert’s NR Simmentals registered our tattoo NRD with the Canadian Simmental Association on December 6, 1995 and our prefix of BERTS on December 14 the same year. The farm name of Bert’s NR Simmentals was chosen incorporating the first initials of my name and my Dad’s name Robert. It is a wonderful reminder of Dad’s involvement and love for the farm as he sadly passed away in May 2015. Rocky, as many knew him, passed on his love of farming and cattle to not only me but to Sam and Nathan as well. My first purebred Simmental purchase was three cows from Dean Henuset’s dispersal, and my first bred heifer was purchased from Preston Stock Farm.
OUR FARM. Our herd today mainly consists of polled Red and Black Simmentals. We are a smaller operation as we calve out 60 to 67 cows. The focus is on quality as we cull aggressively while continuing to build our herd. Bert’s NR Simmentals has purchased bred and open females from many Simmental breeders across Western Canada and Ontario. We incorporate leading genetics by using AI extensively in our program. We also keep replacements females for our own program…sometimes we just can’t let some of the girls leave the farm! In addition to our cattle, we grow corn for silage and alfalfa/grass for hay. We both have off-farm jobs where I work part-time at a dairy farm and Pam is the general manager for two crop commodity organizations.
WHERE WE SELL. Bert’s NR Simmentals is a member of the Pembina Triangle Simmental Association (PTSA), who is a group of Manitoba Simmental breeders who put on an annual Female Sale in Cypress River, MB in November. In 1999, we made our first consignment of a bred heifer to the PTSA Sale. In the years since, we have continued to consign both bred and open heifers. Our yearling bulls are sold through Transcon’s Premium Beef Simmental Bull sale held in Neepawa, MB in March. We also market a small group of commercial animals in the fall.
THE SHOW RING. Bert’s NR Simmentals started showing cattle at agricultural fairs across Manitoba in 2012. Our very first show was the Manitoba Simmental Association Summer Show in Carman, MB where we won Grand Champion Female. We were hooked! We enjoy the ‘show road’ for several reasons: it showcases our program to others, we get to spend quality time as a family, we enjoy meeting new people and love visiting with fellow cattle producers. Both our boys – who we call the Junior Division – are also active with the farm. Both are members of the Graysville 4-H Beef Club, participate in YCSA shows whenever possible, and have attended the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup.
Bert’s NR Simmentals is proud to be part of such a great industry. We look forward to many more years of raising, showing and selling Simmental genetics!
